You can use "add to cart" button on a page or post as long as you are using the correct shortcode for showing the gallery. You are integrating simple shopping cart with nextgen gallery plugin as NGG plugin doesn't have payment gateway option. So any customization you want to do with image or thumbnail, you need to do with nextgen gallery plugin.
