The default login box uses Username/ password
What I need is email/ password
I've spent 2 days trying to get this to work and would appreciate a nudge in the right direction!
Many thanks.

You shouldn't try to change the "username" field into an "email" field in the core code (this will be a lot of core code tweaking that we won't be able to help you with).
What you can do is change the label of the "username" field to "email" (a username can be anything so there is nothing wrong with telling the customers to use their email as the username).
You can change the label of the "actual" email field to something like "contact email" this way you don't have two fields with the same name.
How to you customize the labels of each field? This post will explain it:
I understand how to change field labels, that's fine, but I need to carry the field content over to aweber, hence using the email field instead of username.
If you are using the AWeber integration of eMember it will send the email address and the name to AWeber when a member signs up.
Let's assume we change the username field to simply say 'email address' - how will this get transfered over to aweber as an email address?
The only way I can see is if people add their email twice -
once in the renamed username field and once in the email field.
Do you understand what I am trying to do - only use email/ password as the login and not the current username/ password.
I understand that the true username field (which is an email address too in your case) will not get transported but there is another email field (which is a mandatory field) in the registration form and it will transport that details. So in your case you need to change the label so it makes sense for the user to enter the email address in both fields.
Remember, this is not a feature of eMember that you can change username to an email field. We are just trying to hack it to suit your need with not coding change.
maybe a simple option would be to change 'username' to 'email' and 'email' to 'confirm email'
That way you capture the email, but twice.
It does seem strange that you can't simply change a field, or maybe I don't understand the plugin.
