On a 30 day free membership, a person who is on vacation out of the US can't login. I looked for a setting but am not sure eMember is the problem, i.e, a wi-fi that's not secure - would that block the login?

Please make sure you do not have the "Login Restriction by IP Address" option enabled in eMember or check the number in there. Also check the blacklist section (Members -> Manage blacklist) to make sure that this customer is not there.
