I read here in the forums that there is a way for have one membership level and be able to have the members be a part of different membership levels by enabaling the multi membership setting on the settings page of WP eMember.
So her is what I did:
I created a Free Membeship, created a test member, then created another membership level but this one is a paid level, then I added it to a products page inside the free memberhsip level, so that the free members can see what other paid products I have. The test user purchased the paid membership but it is now showing up in the free membership nav bar.
