I read somewhere you can use any theme with eStore, but here's a caveat for you: when there's overlap, something's gotta give.

I set up a newsletter subscription site with Profits Theme. My plan was to sell single issues with eStore, and provide access to the site using the membership model built into PT for the "subscriptions," with recurring billing.

Each product on its own does the same type of thing - you create a product and post a buy button, send the buyer to Paypal, then authenticate the user automatically and provide access to the product or page. But while eStore allows unlimited products and all sorts of custom discounting (which I really need!) PT allows just 10 products and no discounting.

But if I use eStore for the buy button and authentication, PT doesn't recognize it. And vice versa. It would be nice if I could hand off authentication from eStore to PT, but they claim they don't support eStore and don't plan to.

So I can have either the shopping cart and wonderful product features in eStore, or I can have the cool, easy to setup and manage web site and membership system in PT.

If there's a solution for this, if anyone has figured it out, I would sure love to hear about it.

    Sigh...

    Gonna go look at eMember...

WP eStore works with any properly coded theme when the theme does what its suppose to do (control the look and feel of your site). If a theme is doing all kinds of plugin functionalities then its not a pure WordPress theme. It's just something someone has created to attract customers.

Please read this article so you understand the responsibilities of a theme and plugins and what the problem it creates when someone crosses the boundary:

Excellent post, thanks for that. I've been building sites in WP for 2 years now, and I never really thought about it that way.

It appears eStore was the wrong product in my case. It looks like I will be able to use eMember to manage my subscriptions and protect pages. I have to test it, but apparently all I have to do is tell PT all pages are public and not protected.

I'll post over in the eMember area with my findings.

    Thanks again!

I purchased the Profits Theme as well. As cool as it is, I did notice many glaring shortcomings built into the theme at the expense of a smooth ecommerce flow — such as not playing nice with WP eStore. I'm having the same problem with a theme from Elegant Themes.

I'm building a test site with Profits Theme to work out just these types of payment workflow. I am loathe to give up WP estore, as it is very capable and has worked well on my other commerce site. I may end up just putting Profits Theme "on the shelf" until it catches up with the real world of Internet commerce. A $27 investment is not going to push away a payment system that works, as far as I'm concerned.

In the meantime, Flexsqueeze has many of the same options as Profits Theme, as Optimize Press is a good candidate I'll probably end up buying and testing with the WP eStore family.

    Just my $.02.

Has anyone figured out how to use EStore for the subscription and add them to the correct 'role' in Profits Theme? Seems this should be possible.

It is not a priority, because the theme deviates from acceptable WordPress design principles.

With that said, yes while it may be possible, there will be no cost-benefit in doing so.
