Favicons are a great way to make your site stand out from the crowd. It is also very easy to implement too. In this post I have explained how you can easily make a favicon and use it on your site. What is Favicon? Favicon is short for favorites icon. This is the icon that shows up on the left side of the browser's address bar. Favicon is also known as bookmark icon, website icon, url icon or shortcut icon. Size of a favicon is 16x16 pixels. How to Make a Favicon Easily in Photoshop In Photoshop open a new file (make sure the image size is 16 x 16 Pixels). Design your favicon. You can either start from scratch, use a picture, or a section of a picture. Note: The image size is rather small so I advise not to use a picture with a lot of graphic content. Save the favicon you created as 'favicon.ico' (you can save the image as .png or .jpg and then rename it to .ico) You can even use MS Paint to make favicons too... all you have to make sure is that the image size is 16x16 pixels and the filename is 'favicon.ico'. Search Engine Optimization is a very hot topic in the World Wide Web. After all, everybody wants to rank higher and come up on the first page of Google search and get more traffic. I have identified and made a list of top 15 SEO practices that I tend to forget quite often. These simple SEO techniques if practiced properly can make a significant difference as to how my pages are ranked in the Search Engine Queries. Use rel="nofollow" tag on low value links to not pass the page rank juice. For example 'Read the rest of the entry', 'About', 'Contact' etc. Use proper anchor text for interlinks. Don’t use 'here' or 'there'. Optimize the images, always create alt tags and write description in the alt tag. Use search engine friendly permalinks. Make sure the URLs do not have '&', '?', '!' etc characters. Use hyphens (-) between words to improve readability. Do not use underscores (_), use hyphens (-) instead. Do not use session id in URLs. I installed a translator plugin on one of my WordPress blogs but the plugin wasn't working properly so I disabled it but two days later I found out that my Google web master tools account was reporting about 1100 'Not Found' errors under the 'Web crawl errors' section. All the errors were from translated versions of my blog. I used the 'robots.txt' file to fix this issue. If you don't know what a 'robots.txt' file is, then read the article titled how to control access of the web crawlers or web robots to your site. Basically, add rules to your 'robots.txt' file to Disallow any spider from indexing the translated version of the pages. My 'robots.txt' file looks like the following Depending on your situation you might need to block more languages. Just look in the Google webmaster tools and see which languages are causing the error then add them to the Disallow rule. This post has a textual and video instructions showing how to fix the WordPress "Unable to create directory" error when uploading/inserting image into WordPress. I started getting the "Unable to create directory /wp-content/uploads/2008/12. Is its parent directory writable by the server?" error when uploading or inserting image into a WordPress post just after upgrading to WordPress 2.7. First I thought it is a directory permission related error so I tried changing the permission of my 'upload' directory to 777 but I was still having the same problem. After trying many things I was able to fix it using the following method. Log into your WordPress Admin account. Go to 'Miscellaneous' Settings options from the 'Settings' menu. In the Miscellaneous Settings put wp-content/uploads in the "Store uploads in this folder" text box. Save the Changes by hitting the "Save Changes" button and you are done. This tutorial shows how you can Rotate a video taken at an angle (for example the video was taken holding the camera vertically) by 90, 180, 270 degrees easily using the Windows Movie Maker software. This tutorial assumes that the video file you are trying to fix is in a format readable by the Windows Movie Maker software (e.g .avi, .wmv, .mpg, .mpeg etc video file format). How to Rotate a Video in Windows XP Import the video clip into Movie Maker (File -> Import into Collections). Drag and drop the imported video onto the Timeline. Select Video Effects from the Tools menu (Tools -> Video Effects). Select and drag the 'Rotate 90' or 'Rotate 270' effect depending on if you want to rotate the video clockwise or anti-clockwise onto the movie on the timeline.
