Import WordPress Users as Members

You can import your existing WordPress users as members by going to the “Import WP Users” interface. So no need to create new member entry for users that already exist in your system.

WordPress doesn’t let you create multiple user accounts using ONE email address. So if you already have an user account with an email address in your system, you can’t create another one using that same address.

Go to the following admin area of the membership plugin to import an existing user account as a member:

WP eMember -> Members -> Import WP Users

This interface lets you import all users or some users selectively. You will also be able to specify what membership level these users will have when they are imported.

Bulk Member Data Importer Addon

The bulk member data importer addon lets you import all your member’s info from a CSV file.

Installing the AddOn

  • Upload the “emember-bulk-member-import.zip” file via the WordPress’s plugin uploader interface (Plugins -> Add New -> Upload)
  • Activate the plugin through the “Plugins” menu in WordPress.

Using The Bulk Importer Addon

Step 1) Prepare the CSV File with Member Information

The first step is to add members to a CSV file under the proper headings. You can download a skeleton of the CSV file here to get an idea of the layout needed.

Please use MS Excel in a windows machine to modify/create the CSV file for best result. It will create the CSV file with the correct format.

If you are exporting from another program, providing it is flexible enough to “order” the headings, be sure to export as CSV. You can then open the file using a spreadsheet software like Excel (or OpenOffice), then paste the headings on top.

When opening the CSV file using spreadsheet software, you will be prompted about which delimiter to use. “Comma” should be selected by default but if not make sure that it is selected, and that it is the only option selected in order for the file to show up as it should. The skeleton file available from the above link will have sample data (that can be safely removed) to give you an idea of the format for the fields.

Step 2) Use the interface to import the data

1) Open the eMember Bulk Importer page by clicking WP eMember -> Member Bulk Import.

2) Click the Upload a .csv file button.

3) Locate the .csv file on your computer and double click it.

4) An Import Summary will be displayed. We’re looking for the Total and Succeeded columns to have the same value at this point.

5) Click WP eMember -> Members to see the newly added/imported members.

Imported Member’s Password

The plugin will generate a random password for the imported users and send them the reset password email. You can customize this email from the “Email Settings” menu of the WP eMember plugin.

How to Bulk Upload/Import Member Details from a CSV File

Update: You should use the bulk member data importer addon to import member data.

You can use the WP CSV to DB plugin to upload member details from a CSV file into the WP eMember’s database.

Before you use this method please note that if you want to import your WordPress users into eMember then there is an easier option for you. Simply browse to the “Import WP Users” tab from the “Members” menu and you will be able to import all your WordPress users into eMember.

Setup/Preparation

  • Install the WP CSV to DB plugin.
  • Download the members.csv template file and open it using Microsoft Excel.
  • Fill up the member details; One member per row (There are two example entries in that file so replace them with actual details).
  • Once you are done entering all your member details then save the file as a CSV file.

Specify the General Options

  • Enter 2 in the “Starting Row” field. This is the row number in the CSV file where you want the plugin to start reading from (the first row is the column titles so you want to read from the 2nd row)
  • Enter “wp_wp_eMember_members_tbl” in the “Database Table Name” field (this is the database table name for the WP eMember’s member table given you haven’t change the default database prefix of wordpress)
  • Enter the content of this text file in the “Column Names” field:

Specify the Input CSV file

Use the upload option to upload the CSV file created in the setup/preparation step.

Import into the Database

Hit the “Import to DB” button which will dump the member details from the CSV file into the database.

Now if you browse to the “Member” menu of WP eMember, you should see all the new members that you just added.

Note

This tool can’t handle importing of eMember custom fields. The primary purpose of this tool is to allow importing of some core member data.
